Foreign Dentists wanting to practice in Canada
If you are a general dentist that attended a US Dental school that is accredited, then all you have to do to practice in Canada is to write the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB) exam and apply for licensure in the province you intend to practice. If you are a General Dentist that attended a school outside of US and Canada, then you must enter the internationally trained dentist program administered at one of the dental schools across Canada and complete the last two years of dental school in a Canadian School. Competition for such positions is fierce. As part of the admission process, candidates also require to write the Eligibility Exam.
The eligibility exam is administered by the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry . The higher one's Eligibility Exam mark, the higher one's chance of admission to the program. As part of the applicaiton process, one needs to translate all the diplomas and transcripts and also notorize them. This may take a long time depending on the country where the Dental degree was received; so start early. If you have not written the TOEFL, write it as soon as possible and plan to get a score above 230 on the computer based test. Proof of permanent residence or citizenship is often required to enter the international Dental Degree Progam. Work on your clinical skills, every school has a priority learning assessment that tests one's clinical skills. Admission is based on your eligibility exam mark, your prior learning assessment score, communication skills, and interview. If you are a dental specialist trained outside Canada and USA, you may have an opportunity to get a Canadian license starting 2009. For more information contact Royal College of Dentists of Canada
