Practice Medicine in the United States
Roughly 10,000 foreign MDs apply for residency positions in the US on a yearly basis. Approximately, 35% are successful in securing a position somewhere in the US which is a relatively good statistic compared to other counties. Here are some helpful hints:
- Try to write the USMLE steps 1 and 2 (clinical skill [CS]) and Step 2 (CK clinical skill)
- Step 1 and Step 2 CK can be written all over the world in Thompson Centers. But step 2 CS, can only be written only in five US locations in five cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston and Philadelphia .
- It is best not to exit the US when one plans too write the step 2 CS. One should try to stay in the US as a researcher with a J visa. To obtain a J visa one needs to work voluntarily and receive a letter of support from the employer. After staying in the US for one year, one can apply to The Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Please check the ERAS link for new requirements for the 2008 applicants.
