Rehabilitation Sciences

What is it?

Rehabilitation Sciences is comprised of two disciplines. Physiotherapy (PT) and Occupational Therapy (OT). PTs work to improve physical mobility and health. Physiotherapists help people with joint and muscle injury and help them recover faster and regain their mobility. The injuries can range from sports injuries, falls or accidents. OTs usually work closely with people with physical disabilities and educate them to improve activities of daily living. For example, people who have had serious injuries and may have compromised mobility may consult with an OT to see how they can regain abilities with their activities of  daily living (taking a shower, dressing, eating etc).

Academic programs

Most programs are graduate programs leading to a MSc degree. Applicants need to have completed a BSc degree to apply. Admission to the program is competitive requiring at least a B+ average. Those interested in research along with clinical practice can also pursue a Ph.D degree.

Where do PT and OTs work?

PT and OTs can work both in the hospital or community clinics. They can also go into private practice in the case of PTs and private consultants in the case of OTs.

Job prospects

PTs and OTs continue to be in demand with the increase in the number of the aging population in North America.
